The Lauren Lake husband spent almost two decades far from the national spotlight. In 2026, local headlines pulled him into it. So who is Carlos Woods, and what does the public record say about him?
This profile of the Lauren Lake husband follows him from a Virginia Beach high school to a Super Bowl ring. It leans on his own words, a university biography and local news reports. Then it checks each source against the others.
One section covers a 2026 school-funds inquiry. It reports allegations only. We found no report of charges as of October 3, 2026.
Lauren Lake Husband Carlos Woods in Brief
Carlos Woods was born April 21, 1980, and grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, then played linebacker at Delaware State. He coached for the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals, and he met Lauren Lake while working for the Colts. They married in 2007, have a son named Carlos Jr., and Woods later coached at Booker High School in Florida.
Carlos Woods’ Early Life in Virginia Beach
Woods was born April 21, 1980, according to the Pro Football Archives coaching database. He grew up in Virginia Beach. Delaware State’s athletics office later called him a standout at Ocean Lakes High School.
Little else about his childhood is on the record. We found no on-record details about his parents or siblings. So we haven’t guessed at any.
From Delaware State Linebacker to Penn State Graduate Assistant
Woods enrolled at Delaware State in 1999 and played three seasons for the Hornets. His best year came in 2000, when he made 35 tackles. That ranked eighth on the team, and the Hornets finished 7–4. The university said it was their first winning record in five years.
He graduated in 2003. Then he went home and spent three years as an assistant at Landstown High School. Landstown went 40–2 in that stretch under head coach Chris Beatty.
In 2005, a Penn State coach visiting Virginia Beach on a recruiting trip got him talking. That chat led Woods into Penn State’s master’s program. He also joined Joe Paterno’s staff as a graduate assistant.
He helped with the defensive line, special teams and strength training. Penn State went 11–1 that season. The Nittany Lions beat Florida State 26–23 in three overtimes at the 2006 Orange Bowl.
How Lauren Lake and Carlos Woods Met
The only account of how they met comes from a university release, not from either of them directly. Delaware State’s athletics office wrote in 2012 that Woods met Lake while working with the Colts. It called her an attorney, author, relationship expert and media personality. That one line is the fullest account we found.
Neither has shared a longer public version that we could find. We found no on-record account of a proposal, a wedding date or a venue.
The year is clear, though. They married in 2007. That puts the marriage past 18 years by October 2026.
The quiet stands out. Lake built part of her career on talking about relationships. She worked as a TV relationship expert and wrote a 2009 advice book for single women. Yet she keeps her own marriage mostly off the record.
What This Relationship Means to Them, In Their Own Words
The Lauren Lake husband has said less about the marriage than she has. Her clearest words came in an Essence commentary. She wrote it while Woods still coached in the NFL.
She said one of his defensive linemen joked that the couple were “The Huxtables.” The locker room laughed, she wrote. Lake took it as a compliment. She said she was proud to be a living example of Black marriage for the team’s young players. She also mentioned a weekly grocery run the two shared.
Woods has spoken about family in a different setting. After the 2011 lockout, he spent a year away from football. He called that year “a blessing” because he got more time with his wife and son. He also said returning to Delaware State would keep him close to home.
Read together, the two statements point the same way. Lake talks about shared pride. Woods talks about time. Neither statement mentions money, fame or her TV career.
What Reporters Found That Wasn’t in the Interview
Start with job titles. Lake calls her husband an NFL defensive coach. Delaware State lists him as a defensive assistant, scouting assistant and administrative staffer. Pro Football Archives has him as a defensive quality control coach for 2007 and 2008. Those aren’t position-coach titles, but Lake’s shorthand fits the work. Neither account is wrong.
Next, the years. Delaware State says nearly three years with the Colts. Pro Football Archives lists only 2007 and 2008. The Sarasota Observer says 2006 to 2008. The gap makes sense if his first year was the internship. Add 2006, and the Colts went 37–11 in the regular season across those three years. That matches a figure some profile sites repeat.
Two smaller mismatches follow. Pro Football Archives shows a 1998 Delaware State line, while the university says he enrolled in 1999. And local outlets put Booker’s 2025 record at 12–2, while some national sites say 13–2. We use 12–2, the local figure.
One last gap is between an account and reporting. Woods disputed a news report of a criminal inquiry, and police had confirmed one. We cover that below.
Lauren Lake Husband and the Colts Years
After his Penn State degree, Woods applied for a paid internship with the Colts and got it. He stayed nearly three years under head coach Tony Dungy, per Delaware State. His jobs included defensive assistant, scouting assistant and administrative staffer.
On February 4, 2007, the Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29–17 in Super Bowl XLI in Miami. Woods sat in the press box that night, running slide presentations for the coaching staff. The team gave him a championship ring.
He still talks warmly about it. In 2025, he told ABC7 the internship taught him how a program runs day to day under Dungy. He added that getting to the Super Bowl, and winning it, was a stroke of luck. The Colts years are also when the couple’s story begins.
Bengals, a Lockout and a Year at Home
Dungy retired and the Colts restructured their staff in 2009. Woods then joined the Cincinnati Bengals under coach Marvin Lewis. He helped with linebackers and strength and conditioning. In 2010, he prepared presentations for team meetings.
The Observer lists his Bengals titles as assistant strength and conditioning coach and coaching assistant, 2009 to 2011. The 2011 NFL lockout ended that run, according to Delaware State. Woods spent the next year away from the game. He helped care for his son and ran a sports training business in New York.
The release called Carlos Jr. a two-year-old in August 2012. That puts his birth around 2010.
Back at Delaware State, Then California
In June 2012, Booker High School in Sarasota named Woods its head coach. The school had narrowed 75 applicants to eight finalists, the Observer reported then. He joined his first meeting with players by Skype from New Jersey. A 2025 Observer story says he never coached a game there.
The reason came two months later. Delaware State hired him to coach defensive safeties under Kermit Blount. Blount called Woods an outstanding young man with experience at every level, from high school to the pros.
We couldn’t confirm how long he stayed in Dover. We also couldn’t confirm where he worked between 2012 and 2017.
By 2017, he was an assistant at Gavilan College in California. The Hollister Free Lance reported that 17 players lived in one three-bedroom house under a meals-and-bedding deal. The college later gave the program a two-year postseason ban and three years’ probation. Reports say Woods was among the staff placed on leave.
In 2019, he was head coach at Pierce College in Los Angeles. The student paper The Roundup reported claims that he charged players for housing and that as many as 30 lived in one apartment. The college also looked into recruiting and eligibility claims. He was placed on administrative leave, the Observer reported.
Those were allegations. We found no on-record response from Woods in the coverage we reviewed. The reports don’t say how the Pierce review ended.
Booker High School: 2022 to 2026
Woods came back to Booker in 2022, this time as defensive coordinator. He held that job through 2024. When head coach Scottie Littles resigned in April 2025, Woods took over as interim head coach. The school dropped the interim tag about a week later, ABC7 reported. He also served as athletic director.
Booker went 12–2 in 2025 and made the Class 3A state semifinals. The Observer reported that his defensive ideas came largely from Tony Dungy and Ohio State’s Larry Johnson.
The 2026 School-Funds Inquiry
This part comes from news reports, school records and police statements. Everything here is an allegation unless noted. Nobody has been found responsible for anything.
What’s Confirmed vs. What’s Alleged
The Lauren Lake husband’s departure from Booker is well documented. These points are on the record:
- Woods confirmed his dismissal by text to the Observer on July 24, 2026.
- District records, as the Observer reported, list a resignation on July 31, after a June 10 suspension from coaching.
- Booker named Lance Hoeltke its new coach on July 29.
- Sarasota police said they have an active criminal inquiry based on allegations from an outside agency. They said it doesn’t involve harm to students.
- Police later said the matter began with the school district. They’re reviewing bank statements and financial records to decide on charges.
The allegations come from the district’s report, as the Sarasota Herald-Tribune described it. The report lists 55 unapproved Avis rentals costing the school $15,811.05 from March 2023 to March 2026. Interim principal Gregory Rumph reported his concerns to human resources on April 29, 2026. The superintendent said the district’s review found school money was used for rentals, including some for personal use.
Woods’s side differs. According to the report, he proposed to repay the charges and said the rentals supported students and athletics. He denied any intent to do wrong. He also told the Observer, without being asked, that he “never touched money” at Booker.
He also answered the police claim directly. His statement said, “That claim is false.” Police had already confirmed an inquiry to ABC7 by email. The two accounts differ, and we report both. In a separate July statement, he thanked Booker’s students, coaches and staff and said the memories would stay with him.
The fallout was large. More than 20 players left, the Herald-Tribune reported. Booker lacked enough players for a varsity team, and the Venice opener fell through.
Lauren Lake isn’t named in any coverage we reviewed. We found no statement from her. She remains on the bench for We the People with Judge Lauren Lake, renewed through the 2026–27 season.
Family Life: A Son and a Private Home
Lake and Woods have one son, Carlos Jr., known as C.J. Delaware State’s 2012 release called him two years old, so he’s now a teenager. Lake has appeared with him in a live video on her public TikTok account.
Beyond that, the family keeps details private. We haven’t guessed at any.
Work Beyond Football and the Money Question
Online profiles often call Woods an artist, designer and entrepreneur behind a clothing line called Woods Collections. We couldn’t find independent reporting on that brand, so we treat it as unconfirmed. His documented work outside the game is the New York training business he ran around 2011 and 2012.
On money, no verified net worth exists for Woods. Estimates for his wife run from $2.7 million to $5 million, and none come from financial disclosures. The Lauren Lake husband’s own finances are not public record. [INTERNAL LINK: Lauren Lake net worth → full income breakdown and estimate range]
