The Power of Your Favorite Jeans: What They Really Say About You

Jeans

One of the things that we are all encouraged to do these days is to express ourselves. There are lots of ways to do it, but clothes are a particularly popular method.

That is because they are clearly visible to everyone. Dressing in a way that fits your personality makes it obvious to all what type of person you are.

In some cases, this can mean older people wearing youthful clothes. In others, it can mean bright colors to indicate extroversion.

Jeans are very common clothing choice, so let’s look at what different denim types say about their wearers.

Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans hit their peak of popularity a few years ago. What this indicates is that a person who is still wearing them now is not someone who is dedicated to fashion.

That does not mean they pay no attention to it whatsoever though. After all, they were aware enough to buy a pair when they were hot items.

It is more likely that they have a casual and laidback approach to fashion. They wouldn’t want to be seen as hopelessly out of date (and would ditch the jeans if they reached that point).

But they are fine with not always being on top of trends. The implication is that they have more important things going on.

These jeans also say a person is at ease with themselves and how they look. A more insecure personality would be unlikely to wear something so form-fitting.

Bell-Bottoms

Bell-bottoms are not to be confused with flared jeans as you are to focus on the bell shape of these jeans. Originally designed for sailors, bell-bottoms have become a staple jean due to their snug upper fit on the thigh that then opens up and flares past the knee.

Much like in the 80s, bell-bottoms show that you are fashionably eccentric. This bold look can be emphasized more through modern patchwork designs with unique patterns which can be used to elevate your personality through your clothing.

Stacked Jeans

In contrast with skinny denims, urban stacked jeans are a hot property right now.  If someone is wearing them, it will suggest that they pay close attention to how they look.

The psychology behind this suggestion lies in the fact that they have chosen a trendy piece of clothing. Stacked jeans are also a high visibility item of dress.

A person who is unconcerned by their appearance and not bothered about making an impact on others would choose more unobtrusive clothing. Selecting stacked jeans would be likely to create a positive impression on others, in the right setting.

Studies have found that observers respond well to those who are stylishly dressed, as long as it is appropriate. These jeans indicate confidence, interest in the new and a desire to be noticed, which are positive traits.

Boot-Cut Jeans

These are denims that get wider lower down to fit over boots. They are associated with men who do physical jobs.

Wearing them suggests that you are that sort of man. If you are not, this would indicate that you wish you were.

It implies a desire to associate with traditional forms of masculinity. That can be true for a female wearer too, as it may indicate a tomboyish personality.

Psychological studies show that people make judgments about others based on their clothes. That means judgments about what they do and what they are like.

Wearing boot-cut jeans could lead people to think that you work hard or that you are from a blue-collar background.

Distressed Jeans

This type of denim is usually faded or ripped. It has been associated with music movements like punk and grunge, which are about rebelling against norms.

Wearing distressed jeans says that you see yourself as outside of mainstream society. Most people would not want to wear jeans that are heavily faded or have holes in them.

Going against that implies an edgy, anti-establishment attitude. This can attract a negative psychological response from other people though.

Another thing that studies have found is that observers typically develop negative feelings towards people who dress sloppily. They are perceived as less intelligent and competent.

That is often an inaccurate snap judgment, but one that this type of dress risks.

The jeans that you choose will say a lot about you, so be sure to make the right choices.
