They say the universe is in a constant state of change, and we have certainly seen some changes Down Under since 1975, some of which we outline in this short article. Many older people would say life was better 50 years ago, but then this happens with all societies, so perhaps it is not an accurate assessment of how things are.
Convenience
We definitely lead a more convenient lifestyle in 2026 than we did back in 1976; you can literally order anything online and have it delivered to your door. You can even do that with your weekly groceries! Whether a new smartphone or one of those cool glass bongs, ordering online is a breeze; a secure digital payment ensures the product is shipped immediately, plus you can track the package. The Internet has changed the way we live, and for the better, we think; there are so many things you can do online, from booking tickets to paying the water bill, and it is all accessible using a digital device.
Entertainment
While people still attend major sporting events, crowd numbers are noticeably dropping, as more and more people switch to streaming live sports. This is changing the way sports are funded, with major media companies playing a more prominent role, while the music industry is evolving through giants like Spotify and YouTube. People are still watching movies, much like sports; theatre numbers are dropping, thanks to platforms like Netflix.
Finance
The world of finance is also evolving, with online lenders taking over from traditional banks as the primary lenders; blockchain enables secure transactions, and this is the future. If you wanted to borrow money to start a small business in 1976, you would make an appointment with your local bank manager and present them with your plan. If they liked it, you got your loan, although you would have to wait a few days for your answer. Today, you can apply online and get approval within minutes, and interest rates are competitive.
Logistics
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since the mid-seventies, as far as logistics go; improved roads, rail networks and air services have made logistics much quicker and easier, while population numbers have risen steadily, increasing the consumer demand significantly. Railway lines are much improved, and with new lines, transporting commercial goods is faster and cheaper than it was 50 years ago, when we relied on road trains.
Employment
Not much has changed in this arena, with the exception of a growing tech sector; construction always happens, and while materials have changed, building methods have not. The service sectors are as busy as ever, while unemployment is stable, which means there are job opportunities if you are willing to work.
These are just some of the changes we have witnessed in the past few decades, and one thing is for sure: life has never been easier in sunny Australia.
