We know that moving can feel chaotic. But it doesn’t have to be.
With the right organization and mindset, you can see this for the fresh beginning it is.
Did you know that over 12.1% of Americans moved in 2023, and 12.6% in 2022? That’s a lot of people dealing with boxes and last-minute decisions.
And while many rely on moving and storage companies for help, a little preparation and insider info can save you time, money, and stress. So, if you’re getting ready for a move soon, here are 7 moving tips you’ll wish you knew sooner. And trust us, these will change the game.
1. Start Early (But Not Too Early)
Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. It’s tempting to put it off until the weekend before the move, but this will just lead to panic, losing your favorite things, and stress getting the best of you (which we definitely don’t want).
Here’s the trick for you. Start packing things you don’t need every day about a month before your move date. Things like books, seasonal clothes, kitchen gadgets you normally don’t use, or decor can all be packed early.
Starting early gives you time to organize and go through your things and see what you don’t need anymore without any pressure.
2. Create a Moving Folder
Put all of your new address info, rental documents, contracts, and moving contacts in one folder. Have a digital copy and a physical one (in case your phone or laptop dies).
This will really help you stay organized and clear up any issues that could come up during the move. You can also put your moving checklist here.
3. Use Color-Coding for Boxes
Imagine you arrive at your new place, all tired and sweaty, and then you have to figure out which box goes where. You’ll be frustrated, and unpacking will feel like a literal nightmare.
To avoid this, get some colored markers and assign each room a color. For example, blue for the kitchen, green for the bedroom, red for the bathroom, and so on. Mark the boxes accordingly.
Also, write the contents on the boxes, like “coffee mugs” or “winter sweaters.” This helps movers and storage companies know where everything should go without you having to explain it a million times.
4. Pack an Essentials Bag
When everything is packed, you don’t want to spend hours going through boxes looking for your phone charger, toothbrush, or a change of clothes.
That’s why you need to pack an essentials bag with things you’ll need once you arrive at your new place. This includes things like:
- Your phone charger
- Important documents (your ID, lease, driver’s license)
- Toiletries
- Some snacks and a water bottle
- A change of clothes
- Basic kitchenware (like a coffee mug or a plate)
Keep this bag near you when you’re traveling to our new home (we don’t want it to get lost).
5. Use Your Household Items as Packing Materials
Bubble wrap and packing paper are great, but you can also make it easier for yourself and use the things you already have.
Use towels, blankets, socks, or even t-shirts to wrap fragile items. This saves money, reduces waste, time, and keeps your stuff safe. Plus, it’s an eco-friendly way to pack.
6. Measure Doorways and Your Furniture
It sounds obvious, but many people forget this step and end up with a couch that won’t fit through the door (an expensive and frustrating problem).
Before your moving day, measure your biggest furniture pieces and the doorways, staircases, and elevators you’ll be using. This helps avoid surprises and helps you figure out the best way to get things inside (and outside).
If a piece of furniture won’t fit, you can disassemble it before the move.
7. Label Fragile Boxes Clearly (And Pack Them Smart)
Fragile items are the most stressful to move, but you can protect them with the right packing and labeling.
Write big “FRAGILE” labels on all of your boxes with breakable stuff. Also, put the most delicate items in smaller boxes. Fill the empty spaces with soft materials (like crumpled paper or towels) to prevent anything from getting damaged. And always pack plates vertically. It’s safer that way.
Ready for That Move?
Moving doesn’t have to be this chaotic, exhausting experience. By planning ahead and using these simple hacks, you’ll be able to relax and maybe even have some fun along the way.
Just start early, stay organized, prepare everything on time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’ve got this.
